Aine Art Museum

The art collection presented in the museum is from the Aine Visual Arts Foundation collection. It is a collection of Finnish arts from the beginning of the 19th century up until the present time. In addition to its basic collection, the museum arranges various national and international displays. The view from the cafeteria of the Art Museum opens out to the Town Bay and over the border to Sweden. An auditorium for 110 people. Open Tue-Thu 11-18, Fri-Sun 11-15. Entrance fee: 4 €, children for free. Guided tours for groups.

Alatornio Village Museum

A two-storied grain storage building situated next to the church of Alatornio. There are a total of 1000 artefacts in the museum, mainly everyday domestic and practical items. In summertime the museum is open on Saturdays 14-18. At other times by request.

Arboretum Park

A botanical garden situated in Kalliopudas, Tornio. The garden is about 3 hectares in size and it has over 1 000 different types of plants. An excellent teaching and observation area. There is also a playground for children in the area. No entrance fee.

Church of Alatornio

Completed in 1797. A wooden church was standing on this site at a very early date, perhaps as early as 1208. Some parts have remained from the fifteenth-century medieval stone church. In earlier centuries the church acted as the central church for a very extensive area. The Alatornio church is part of the Struve Geodetic Arc protected as a Unesco World Heritage Site. The point
located in Alatornio church tower was measured in 1842. It was marked on the bell tower and carvings from that time are still visible on the inside walls of the bell platform. The church is open in June and July on weekdays 9-17 and at other times by request.

Church of Haparanda

"The clean house", which is covered with copper sheet, has aroused both dissatisfaction and delight. The church was constructed in 1963 to replace the old church of Haparanda that was burned down. It was taken into use in 1967. There is a recorded guidance in Swedish, Finnish, English and German in the church. In summer open daily 9-19 and other times by request.

Church of Karl Gustav

The Parish of Karl Gustav was founded in 1782. Until that it had been Alatornio Parish Chapel. The church was taken into use in 1796. There is a recorded guidance in Swedish, Finnish, English and German in the church.

Church of Tornio

One of the most beautiful wooden churches still in use in Finland. The church was designed and completed by Matti Härmä in 1686. It is dedicated to the Swedish Queen Eleonora. The church is under renovation 12 April - 31 August 2010!

Gallery Koivikko

The station building was constructed in 1918. It is the only railway that connects Sweden to the east. There you can see the difference between Swedish and Finnish track widths. There is an exhibition about the history of Haparanda. Nowadays the railway station is host to a youth centre where young people can spend their free time. Café and internet.

Hermansons Handelsgård

Hermansons trading house was built in 1832 and it is one of the best remained buildings in Northern Sweden. The main building with 12 storehouses forms a closed yard. Mikael Benius (later Hermanson) bought the trading House in 1906. The business has included over the years the dyeing of threads and luxurious Russian furs. Open by request.

Historical Museum of Tornio River Valley

A visit to the museum gives a good overall impression of the history of the entire Western part of Lapland . Naval cannons found in Tornio , and an old river boat can be seen in the grounds of the museum. Open Tue-Fri 11-17, Sat-Sun 11-15. Entrance fee: 2-4 €.

Jaur Showroom

A design gallery which presents the internationally renowned artefacts of Eero Hyrkäs. The display shows traditional handicraft knowledge, which has taken influences from the nature of Lapland. The raw material for the artefacts is steel from the northernmost steel factory in the world. Open Mon-Fri 12-16.30. Groups must book in advance. Free entrance.

Kukkolaforsen

Kukkola rapids are situated 15 km north of Haparanda. You can see the traditional method of catching whitefish and, among other things, pay a visit to a fishing museum. Also in the area, there are mills from the 19th century, sawmill, mill building, cowshed, workshop, store room, fishing shed, whitefish grilling in a Lappish tent and an ice cellar. Open in summertime, other times by request.

Kukkolankoski

Kukkola rapids are situated 15 km north of Tornio. In the summer the fishermen catch whitefish with a scoop-shaped net, which continues a tradition dating back to medieval times. Whitefish roasted on a spit (a wooden stake) is the delicacy of Kukkola rapids and visitors can watch it being prepared in a traditional way. Activities organized by local entrepreneurs.

Old water tower of Haparanda

The construction of the brick tower from 1919 onwards consumed 195 000 bricks.
Today the water tower functions as a part of the local heating centre.

Orthodox Church of Tornio

In 1825 Czar Alexander I made the decision to found and construct a military
church inTornio. The present church building is from 1884 and it is dedicated to
the apostles Peter and Paul. It is part of the orthodox parish of Oulu. The church
is situated in the centre of Tornion near the Finnish customs.

Perävaara

Alanen Perävaara is a part of the Struve Geodetic Arc protected as a Unesco World Heritage site. Located in Haparanda, 3 km southwest from Karungi.

Silversmith Jorma Smeds forges traditional Lap Silver using hammer and an anvil.
The same methods were used by his earliest known predecessor Nils Michelsson in
the mid 17th century. Visitors can buy these genuine handicrafts of high quality.

Stone Age settlements

The remains of Stone Age settlements in Kärrbäck are some of the best preserved of their kind in Sweden. Located on the northern outskirts of Haparanda on the road 356. In ancient times Kärrbäck used to be on the coast.
